Bred Barn Owls |

|
The story & images below relate to captive bred Barn
Owls. This is some of the problems we have to deal with when
Barn Owls are over bred, sold & given to inexperienced
people
The two Barn Owls shown in these images were handed to
us by a keeper who struggled to look after them?
This sadly outlines the reality of what is happening in the
UK to some of the Barn Owls that are needlessly bred, then
sold & passed onto people who are inexperienced.
It is important to state that part of our job at the Centre
is to care for the number of birds that are handed to us.
In addition we are always prepared to help, to advise & to
guide inexperienced keepers on issues that can support bird
welfare.

Brief history on the birds circumstances
These two Barn Owls were sadly kept confined in a Cat
Box, this being the one they had arrived in, they were confined
like this for approximately one month prior to them being
handed to us.
On opening the door of the cat box we were very saddened &
shocked to see the state they were both in, this being both
mentally & physically.
From head to toe they were covered in their own excrement
& on a closer inspection we found that one of the Barn
Owls on the right had suffered a broken leg. It is a disgrace
that a human being can treat Owls or any animals this way.
Repairing the damage caused: With proper care &
attention, a
good avian vet & a comfortable aviary to rest, it
wasn't long before these birds were back to good health. They
are now doing exceptionally well as seen in the above right
hand image.

Wild Birds that are found injured
Please Note: We cannot house wild birds at the Centre,
we can only house birds that are captive bred. In support
of wild casualties we do offer a 24hr rescue & pick up
service, which can only apply to the county of Gloucestershire.
We will transport an injured bird to a nearest avian vet or
to a nearest wildlife sanctuary for treatment & rehabilitation.
The reasons why we cannot take a wild bird in is purely because
we haven't got the seclusion aviaries needed for rehabilitation.
Also keeping a wild bird too
close to captive bred birds & humans would create a possible
risk of imprinting the bird to humans. Also all aviaries at
the Centre are on public display.
