The small profit we generated from nest box sales help fund the conservation work of our charity in support of wild Owls.
If you want to pick your nest box(s) up from the Centre, this can also be arranged. Please call us first on 01452 383999.
Nest Boxes are normally always in stock so we have them to hand to support our own local projects & those we support nationally. All boxes are made at the Centre's workshop by our dedicated team of Owl Conservationists.
Over the years the Barn Owl Centre have worked very hard in developing a nest box suitable for Barn Owls, Tawny Owls, Little Owls & the Kestrel, the Kestrel being a small falcon. From 1997 we have positioned over 1200 of our nest boxes within a great number of project sites, both local & throughout the UK with great success in support of breeding Owls.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PUT UP AN OWL NEST BOX?
There is no set time, Owls that are attracted to nest boxes will use them all year round but what is also important is nest boxes offer adult birds & future young places to roost, this is vital to them throughout the year especially during the winter or when the weather is bad. Sometimes a minimum of 2 boxes is better for the Owls than just a single box, two or more offer a choice & important places for these delicate birds to take cover when they need to.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a method to sell additional boxes, within the many projects we manage we have always found that the Owls benefit from more being positioned. If you wish to copy the design of the box you have purchased & make additional boxes please do, this we encourage as additional nest boxes ARE an important asset for the Owls. More boxes in good habitat locations creates better stability.
When putting up a nest box or nest boxes it is important that the entrance of the nest box is positioned facing away from the prevailing wind. This also protects the entrance from draughts during the breeding season & winter weather conditions.
The nest box should be made visible from a distance, similar to that of a natural tree hollow. The average positioning height of a nest box is supplied in the text below.
Different Species & height to be positioned.
Barn Owls: Best located in isolated trees, either in fields or on the edge of woodland. Habitat: Open Countryside supported by areas of rough grassland. Height Positioned: 10 to 16ft.
Tawny Owls: Woodland areas or the edge of woodland. Habitat: Areas of rough scubland. Height Positioned: 10 to 16ft.
Little Owls: Old Orchards, Dykes & areas where there are old willows. Habitat: Mixed areas of grassland, mixed scubland. Height Positioned: 8 to 12ft.
Kestrels: Similar to the location of the Barn Owl. Height: 16 to 24ft.
