A Day as a Bird Handler
This operates all year round
Daily from Tuesday to Friday (Booking Only)
Becoming a Bird Handler for the day is a great way to get you more involved with the birds at our Centre. This will be a full experience day that will involve an assortment of tasks that involve the management & looking after a number of birds of prey.
The day will commence at 10am & end at approximately 5pm.
On arrival we will sit down & run through the daily program, this at times can be changeable on any day. Lunch is not provided, not unless you take a liking to bird food. Please bring a packed lunch with you; drinks will be provided during breaks.
The beginning of the day will start with a small amount of cleaning of bird equipment; this is part of any bird handler’s job plus it supports their welfare.
Following the above your day will consist of the following.
A brief understanding of equipment & handling methods
Weighing birds & a brief informative chat on bird food & bird weight management
You are to help with the preparation of Bird Food for the birds that are to be flown & trained
Handling Techniques, this is when your day starts to get more hands on with the birds.
Hands on Flying & training of Birds (Owls, Harris Hawks, Buzzards & Falcons)
Due to the nature of a handlers duties & the birds they work with, each day can be changable.
As you can see from the above your day will be packed with loads to learn & do, please dress accordingly for the countryside & for any weather condition we will face on the day.
During your stay we hope to teach you many aspects of what it is like to be a bird handler.
